I've since been told it's the stains from the gold mines up near Silverton.

UPFATE on rocks lining the river. -- The rocks lining the Animas River have turned a gold color due to metal/mineral stains from the mines up river. Sure makes it look luring to have the river lined with Gold when you're traveling to one of the Great gold mining towns of the west "Silverton Colorado." lol

No Cathy it's some kind of reflection on the colored rocks lining the shore of the river it went a very long ways. It was most unusual and very pretty.
