Description
The Sycamore tree has a hidden beauty not know by all, it's outside bark of mottled white is characteristic of the inner wood of mottled diamond and snake skin laced wood grain, but it only shows if you cut it a certain way called quarter sawn.
The wood of the sycamore is not used much use when plain sawed straight thru the log like most logs are sawed, but when you cut it like a pie, constantly turning the log which causes it to be rather expensive " labor intensive" it reveals the most beautiful of grains, . Some Oaks and other woods are also cut this way in older furniture and flooring.
I used to own and run a large wood shop mill and once had the opportunity to furnish furniture and all the trim needed for a new cancer center that was built in Indiana.I knew one of Indiana's better know plein air painters who also owned a design gallery. He wanted a wood of special nature and character a lowly wood ,yet when handled by an artist would reveal the inner beauty for the cancer center. We settled on the quarter sawn wood of the magnificent sycamore tree.
It doesn't grow in large abundant groves like some trees which has kept it from being so commercialize like some woods. It truly is one of the most beautiful woods In North America and is found only in the best of the best.
