As you leave Yosemite Park on the east side of California there is a quiet little town you come to called Lee Vining. There you'll find a very large lake called Mono Lake that has rock protrusions coming up out of the lake that grow about one inch per year called TUFA [too-fah]. The strange spires and knobs are formed when fresh water springs containing calcium bubble up through the carbonate-rich lake water. The combining of these waters forms calcium carbonate, a whitish limestone deposit that forms the basis of the tufa formations. They make an eerie photogenic crater looking series of formations that is a World Renown Icon.
