Description
When the first pedestrians crossed on December 1, 1866, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 1,057 feet (322 m) main span.[3] Today, many pedestrians use the bridge to get between the arenas in Cincinnati (Paul Brown Stadium, Great American Ball Park, and U.S. Bank Arena) and the hotels, bars, restaurants, and parking lots in Northern Kentucky. The bar and restaurant district at the foot of the bridge on the Kentucky side is known as Roebling Point.
How many lives have changed because John Roebling built this bridge, how many people have crossed since 1866. Cincinnati has long been the start of places to get to from here to Chicago and beyond. I know my dad left Kentucky in the early 1939 and went through here to Chicago to work as a carpenter for the steel mills with two kids and one on the way. He later in life came back to Cincinnati and helped build such places as the Reds Stadium, Kroger building, and many more.
I even helped build many of the bridges over the I 275 beltway, Tri County Mall, and many buildings down town , before getting into the Real Estate Business and running seven Real Estate offices around the city.
The bridge was the Gateway to better jobs and opportunities galore and is still the HUB of the Midwest. I bet you know someone who came over this bridge to work here and has probably never left. This would make a great image to hang on your office wall or family room at home, it makes a great conversation piece. It was captured on Christmas morning the only time I could get it without traffic coming and going.
