The Sycamore tree has a hidden beauty not know by all, it's outside bark of mottled white is characteristic of the inner wood of mottled diamond and snake skin laced wood grain,but it only shows if you cut it a certain way called quarter sawn.
The wood of the sycamore is not used much use when plain sawed straight thru the log like most logs are sawed, but when you cut it like a pie, constantly turning the log which causes it to be rather expensive " labor intensive" it reveals the most beautiful of grains, . Some Oaks and other woods are also cut this way in older furniture and flooring.
I used to own and run a large wood shop mill and once had the opportunity to furnish furniture and all the trim needed for a new cancer center that was built in Indiana.I knew one of Indiana's better know plein air painters who also owned a design gallery. He wanted a wood of special nature and character a lowly wood ,yet when handled by an artist would reveal the inner beauty for the can...
In 1974 Randall was asked to go on a hunting trip out to Colorado so He thought it might be a good idea to buy a good camera, he says it was one of the best decisions he ever made. He was able to capture images that were soon displayed on many office and restaurant walls around the area. He has been fortunate enough to travel to every state with the exception of Alaska, and had that planned but the Pandemic ended that trip. I'm self taught he says and studied all the best photographers From Ansel Adams forward. His main interest lies in Landscapes, nature, wildlife, farms, barns and the outdoors.
